My Winter Coat Guide: Fall/Winter 2012

Happy Thursday to you!

Today is actually our Friday as my kids don't have school tomorrow due to parent-teacher conferences being held all day.  An extra day to sleep in?  Yes, please!  I'll take it, thank you very much!  I woke up to frost on my grass this morning which means it's cold.  Again.  Let's be honest, it's gonna be cold out for about another 6 months so I'm trying my best to get used to it.  The hardest thing about it lately has been to remember to put a coat on in the morning! In CA I could get away with leaving my house at 10 am with just a cardigan to keep warm...no heavy coat needed.  I can't tell you how many times I have walked out my door lately without a coat on and have had to turn right back around to go get one out of my closet.  It's just not a habit I've mastered yet...working on it!  I've actually had a lot of fun working on it though as I've purchased a few winter coats since we've moved here.  They are certainly necessities in the mid-west!  A few days ago I  had a reader ask me if I had found any good rain coats this season, so I took it a step further.  I've searched high and low and found some great winter coat options for all of you...of course there's millions to choose from out there but here's a sampling of what I am loving:

Rain Coats

I purchased the Ruffled Trench Coat from Anthropologie earlier this fall and LOVE it!  I don't necessarily feel the need to have hoods on my rain jackets because I typically use an umbrella as well to keep a little more covered up.  I love this trench because it can be dressed up or down.

Puffer Coats

I recently purchased the Banana Republic puffer jacket with a promo code online and love it.  I really wanted a white puffer jacket this year (the BR jacket is a creamy white) that could be cinched in the middle so I didn't look and feel like a total marshmallow.  I saw a picture of Kelly Ripa wearing a cinched puffer a while back and loved the way it looked so I've been kind of on the lookout for one like that ever since.  This one will last me years and will basically go with everything.  Perfect for everyday and snow!

Everyday Winter Coats

I tend to be a little more bold when it comes to choosing a color for my everyday coats.  I like a bold, bright color in the winter just as much as a great neutral. My best friend told me about a great deal on the site Very Jane a while back for that cute yellow coat you see above...just under $40!  I couldn't pass that up!  Even my husband told me I'd be crazy to pass at that price. =)  Unfortunately the deal has long since expired, but there are tons of other great options out there at any price point.

Are you all ready for winter?  Or are you still on the hunt for the perfect coat?  What coat are you wearing that you'd recommend?

Do tell!

  4. Thank you so much for taking the time to put all these great winter coat ideas together. So many cute ones, think I am going to buy the Boden one, I like that is has a deteachable hood and is waterproof. The temp went from 80 degrees on Monday to 60 today here in Sacramento, it's so cold now. I love the Anthro ruffle trench coat you bought, it is adorable. I would buy that one but I already have one from BeBe that is very similar. My all time favorite coat -year after year-is my long black wool coat from Jcrew, it was money well spent.
