How I Get Dressed...the process

Good morning!!  I had grand plans of sleeping in this morning since my boys have the day off from school but my kids had a different idea of how they wanted to spend their morning.  Their version included being up at the crack of dawn, being really loud and running up and down the stairs 1,001 times.  All well.  There's always tomorrow, right?!  =)

I had a question from a reader this week about my process for getting dressed in the morning so I thought I'd take you through it using what I wore a few days ago as my example. First let me say, I always like to have some sort of an idea of what I'm wanting to wear before I go into my closet.  I either pull from a set I've pre-created on Polyvore or I try to brainstorm ideas in my head as I'm doing my hair and make-up. It speeds up the process tremendously.

I went into my closet on Wednesday with a certain color combination in mind that I wanted to wear...navy and coral.  I thought that one up while I was curling my second-day hair that I was too lazy to wash. =)   Sometimes I start with a color combination, other times it's a certain item...it changes daily.  So I went into my closet and started creating my outfit by picking out pants.  I pulled out my salmon/pinkish colored Pilcros (close enough to coral for me).  Check!  Next I looked through the blue tops section of my closet and this navy top with cute white polka dots called out.  Check!  Then I realized the top had short sleeves so a cardigan was needed to keep warm (it's like 40 degrees here in the morning lately).  I was thinking maybe black or grey...I found one that had a bit of a design which gave more texture...BONUS!  Check!  Next up...shoes.  It's cold out so naturally I go for boots...flat black on this particular day. I know I have some errands to run and want to be comfy.  I thought about wearing my flat brown boots but didn't like the way the brown looked up against the pink jeans for some reason. Black it is. Check!  Next I checked out the neckline of my top and decided a shorter necklace would look best since i had a higher neckline.  Then I grabbed some earrings, a ring, my watch and bracelets that I thought would look good together.  I always check myself before leaving my room to see if I've hit all four areas for jewelry...neck, wrists, ears and hands.  There's my OCD kicking in again. =)   I sprayed on a little perfume (Daisy by Marc Jacobs on this particular day) as I walked out the door and was good to go.

The whole process took me about 10-12 minutes.  Really, that's as long as getting dressed in the morning SHOULD take, however it's not always that quick for me, I must admit.  Like I said, heading into my closet with SOMETHING in mind beforehand is a big help.  If I walk in with no idea of what I want to wear it adds an extra 10-20 (to 30) minutes at least, easy.  So there ya go...as we would say in my house growing up, it's not rocket science (my dad is actually a rocket engineer so we just told all our friends he was a rocket scientist...sounded much cooler).  It just takes a little preparation and trial and error.

Here's how it all came together:

(Sorry, this is looking a little blurry on Blogger for some reason)

How long does it take you to get dressed in the morning?  Do you pre-plan your outfits to save time?  Or do you fly by the seat of your pants and figure it out as you go?

Happy Friday!

  1. I love this outfit! Particularly the cardigan. Could you do a post on budget friendly, quality cardigan choices? I feel a need to add some more to my wardrobe, but I'm having a hard time finding ones that are quality and $20 or less.

    1. Thanks! I will see what I can come up with for a post next week on cardigans. I will agree the under $20 range is challenging but there are a few. I'll try to hit on a variety of price ranges. =)

  2. I decide either the night before as I'm settling down to sleep (if it's for work the next morning) or when I'm in the shower in the morning having looked out of the window first. Weekends don't matter so much as I have more time but in the week I lay out Elodie's clothes the night before and like to have a plan for mine otherwise I just stand in front of the wardrobe looking at everything and floundering! That also means she seizes the opportunity to start pulling shoes, bags etc out of my wardrobe whilst I'm deciding which then means tidying up and making us late!

  5. I try to think through my outfit before I go to bed the night before, but lately, lately I'm back to winging it. Whatever sounds comfortable in the morning is what I end up going with. Comfort has already won me over! :)

  7. You look great, and you just inspired me to drop money on those boots. (I got a deal! $138!) I love the way they're vaguely Western without being all showy about it. Sigh, blogs are like consumerist heroin for me.

    1. You're welcome, and I'm sorry! =) I agree...it's so easy to find things you love on blogs! I picked up the boots for within $5 of what you got them for and also felt that it was a good deal. I've worn them several times now and LOVE them! Super comfy!

  8. Jenni - love this outfit! And I'm just like you. I better have an idea of what the heck I'm going to put on my body before I walk in the closet...or I might be there for awhile.
I wanted to let you know that either this week or next week I'm going to be featuring one of your previous outfits on my blog! I will of course link back to you! (It will probably be in two weeks, but I will let you know when it's going to happen.)

  9. What a long process just to get dress. That's how it is for us women. It takes meticulous eye and time to look great and perfect. I love your cardigan by the way.

  10. Great post- what probably seems easy (sort of) and natural to us clothes freaks- can be really daunting for many people. Suggesting starting with a color palette in mind is a great idea!

For some reason, most of my outfits start with what I'm going to be wearing on bottom (jeans, pants, skirt, dress...) and then I build from there. I like to follow a 'rule of 3' where each outfit has at least 3 elements to it.
