A Peek into my Closet

When we moved into our new house I had the opportunity to go through everything I owned as I hung it all up in my new closet.  I went from a sliding door closet in our old home, to a walk-in closet which has been such a nice change.  It's not the biggest walk-in closet ever, but it's much roomier than the one I previously had.  I tried to organize it so I could see almost everything (some shoes are still hiding unless I move clothes out of the way to see them, and I stuck to color coding by the rainbow.  That's my favorite way of organizing.  These aren't the greatest pictures ever, but I've had a few requests to post pictures of my new closet so hopefully these will give you an idea of how I organized:

View to the left side as you look in:
(Top shelf holds bulky sweaters and purses, while the rack holds scarves, winter coats, dress pants and dresses.  Shoes line the floor underneath two rows deep).

Looking straight in:
(Top rack has all my hanging shirts and bottom rack holds my belts (can't see), tanks and skirts.  Shoes line the floor three rows deep).

Close-up look of shoes and bottom rack:

Behind the Closet door:
(If you go in the closet and close the door you'll find a whole wall lined with shelves which was perfect for my folded shirts (top shelf) and cardigans (bottom three shelves).   I have my cardigans folded in piles according to color and sleeve-length.  I'm a little OCD like that. =)  Shoes line the floor, two rows deep.  I mainly keep summer sandals under there.  There is also a shoe holder that hangs behind the closet door that I forgot to take a picture of, that holds more flat sandals and flats.

So there's a little peek into my new closet.  I love it!  It's so much easier to see everything in this closet and organizing by color helps me see what I have and what I'm lacking (not much).

How do you organize your closet?  Do you go by the rainbow?  By brand?  By wherever you can find an empty hanger?  =)

After going through my closet (again) I have found a few more items that I plan to sell.  They are items I like and even love, but just don't work for me for one reason or another.  I'll be posting a few items soon so if you're interested, check back!

Have a great Tuesday!

  1. oh how I wish I had a walk in closet! my closet is so small I have to do seasonal items -- which really limits my outfit possibilities! xo

  3. Amazing! Lovely job! I turned a small bedroom into a large dressing room and really love it. I notice you are using mostly plastic hangers - I highly recommend Joy Mangano hangers (HSN, Target, Container Store) - they are both thinner and more durable than plastic - plus they give a professional look. Nothing ever falls off them and they do add more space to a closet.

  4. I love this peek inside your closet - you are a great organizer! I also have things in order by color/sleeve length - my problem is keeping it tidy as I put laundry away and my kids pull shoes off the racks, or I try on two or three pair of shoes with an outfit and then I'm in a hurry so they stay in the middle of the floor...wish it could always look as tidy as your space - it's like a little haven in there!

    1. Ok, you must know it certainly doesn't stay lookimg this organized all the time! I do the same try-on game as you, all the time! I wish I had a little closet-cleaner fairy to come clean up after me! =)

  5. What do you do with your pants/jeans? I saw the section on your dress pants, is that where they all are? I'm just currently debating between folding them on my shelf or hanging them? And how in the world do you keep all of those folded shirts/cardigans from wrinkling? I must be folding wrong!

    1. Oh, sorry...forgot to mention all my jeans. If you look at the picture where you're looking straight into my closet, under the top rack there is a shelf where all my jeans are. I have them divided into piles....shorts, colored ankle denim, regular denim, etc. I fold all my jeans. As for my cardigans, they all get creases in them from folding but I'd rather than than "hanger mountains" from hanging them! (Hanger mountains are when the shoulders of the sweaters get big bumps from where the end of the hanger falls. My 10th grade algebra 2 teacher coined the phrase "hanger mountains"...he used to complain about how his wife would hang his shirts on hangers that that made the bumps in his shoulders...random, I know). =)

  6. Wow! You have a lot of clothes! I think the hardest part would be trying to decide which of all these options to wear on a daily basis...I'd want to wear them all!

Way to go with the closet organization! We've been here a month, and I have put off my own closet for too long. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Cardigans and shoes...I have a major obsession with both! =) Good luck with the organizing...is it bad that this was the first space I organized when we moved? ;)

  13. Thanks Jenni for posting the link to this in response to my comment, I am so nosey that I love sneaking a peek into other peoples wardrobes. Goodness me you have A LOT of clothes but it's all very well organised so as not to forget what you own and keep wearing the same stuff time and again. Like you, I organise my folded piles in colour order and I hang my tops according to sleeve length. Anything that helps being able to find stuff when you are in a hurry and just *know* it is in there somewhere!!
