Back to the Drawing Board and a few OOTD's

So if you read my blog you know that I'm attending a family wedding in March. The colors are yellow, grey and black. Since we're part of the family of the groom, we're kinda supposed to dress in the wedding colors...that's what our families do at weddings. I had picked out a dress from Boden that ended up looking AWFUL on me...the dress itself was very cute, but the colors next to my skin tone were not. It was also too long...I ordered the long length thinking the regular length would be too short...bad idea.

Onto the Sun Shades dress from Anthropologie. I had settled on wearing this dress as it was a good length and has the perfect shade of yellow in the striping. I decided to pair it with a raspberry colored cardigan as I thought that would add a pop of color into the wedding color mix (why not). I ordered a cardigan I found at Nordstrom (like the ONLY raspberry colored shorter length cardigan I could find) thinking I had hit the jackpot. It arrived and was too long and a tad too baggy for my liking. It didn't come in a smaller size, or if it did it's now sold out, so now I was outta luck. I was also starting to doubt my love for the dress. It was becoming hard to style and I was starting to think maybe I wouldn't get enough use out of it after the wedding to justify it's purchase. I hope to buy something that will fit well into my wardrobe after the wedding is over. So now I have decided to return it all and start over.

Holy cow, who would have known this color combination would be so hard to work with! I also have certain things that I look for that make finding an outfit a little harder like I only wear dresses or skirts that are knee-length (dresses typically have to be 40" long to even consider them) and I don't do sleeveless--just a personal choice (I always wear a cardigan if I choose a tank on top). The wedding is in March in AZ so the weather may be warm and it may be cooler, you never know. I know I am putting WAY too much thought into this, and really, it's JUST a wedding, but I do like to try to look sorta cute at these family functions! =) I have scoured tons of sites in the past few days looking for new options. Ideally I would like to find a dress, but at this point I'm starting to think a skirt and top will do. I found this skirt at J Crew that I'm in LOVE with and am wondering if I could somehow make it look wedding guest appropriate (as opposed to looking too "day at the office-ish". What do you think? Any ideas? How would you dress this up for a wedding with the colors I have to work with? I am also willing to bring other colors into the outfit. I played on Polyvore trying to come up with some looks but none of them looked dressy enough for the occasion. On a side note, I did come up with this using the skirt and a few other items on my current wish list:

I'm dying for this look! The shoes, skirt, necklace and top...all of it!

Anyhow, if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them!

I'm looking forward to the weekend...we have a date night planned with friends for Saturday night and plan on spending part of the evening (us girls at least) making some returns and browsing/trying things on at Anthropologie. We live 45 minutes away from our nearest Anthro so it's always a treat to get to go (especially without kids in tow). I'm looking forward to date night, needless to say! Oh, and my plan is to talk my husband into getting me this for Valentines day while we're there. I might just get it and wrap it for myself and then tell him thanks...I'd be doing him a favor, right? =)

Hope you all have a great day!

  1. Love both outifts! And I"m with you on that anticipation heels, I love them so much! I'll let you know if I see any wedding options for you. Have a fun date night and a great time at Anthro!

  2. So sad that the Boden and the Anthro dresses didn't work out, boo. But you need to feel GREAT in a dress at a wedding IMO. So the JC citron skirt -- I just saw in store today and it veers more toward green, and a touch neon. So I don't think it will work for your wedding. I'll keep an eye out for something that will work. There's a yellow linen dress at LE Signature, but it might be too casual.

  3. I'll bet that skirt would look like a million bucks on you! I'd pair it with a dressy white top like this

Add a cardi and black patent peep toes, maybe?

Do you have the Circle the Globe Skirt from Anthro in yellow? I can't remember...I think of that silhouette as being more wedding-ish but if not I'm sure you could make the pencil skirt work! You're going to be in lots of pictures, so of course you should find something you love!

  5. I am also looking for a bridesmaids dress in yellow! I was at anthro and saw the most gorgeous yellow and grey dress there for $138. It's not online yet, but Roxy did a review of it today http://effortlessanthropologie.blogspot.com/2011/02/reviews-valley-breeze-tunic-take-two.html
    Good luck!

  6. That's really fun that you guys dress in the wedding colors :) I love the outfit you put together with that yellow skirt, but I guess not for a wedding! Good luck with your search, there should be many spring dresses arriving soon!

  7. Ashley--I just saw that post and fell in LOVE with it from the pictures! A friend of mine saw it in her store today too and mentioned it to me (holla Lauri!). I am hoping to see it in person on Saturday at my local store. I am around 5'6" tall so I'm not sure if it'll be long enough on me as I'm not sure how long the dress is. I'm hoping that it has a good size hem turned under so maybe I can get some more length by bringing it down if need be. I'm dying for it to pop up online ASAP so I can get the deets! Thanks for the suggestion. Hope you're doing well...I miss seeing all your fabulous styling!

  9. I was going to suggest the same dress as Ashley - I think it would look great! I really like your polyvore too though, I was already planning on buying that shirt and I love the skirt. I don't really shop at J. Crew but I'm going to check that one out, the color is so pretty.

  11. I love that spinning top necklace! I am really going to start looking around for an outfit for you since I am on a no-buy I can help you shop! You look so cute when you go casual! I totally understand the stress of finding the perfect outfit for a wedding when you are going to see everyone!

  12. That yellow and grey dress from Anthro would be PERFECT! I really think you need to try it out.

Now, that doesn't mean you shouldn't get the yellow J.Crew pencil skirt because the outfit you created is drool worthy! I simply adore it!!!

  13. Wow, I *love* that polyvore set you put together -- so fabulous. And it makes me want to own that tee! Just put it on my wishlist.

As for the Sun Shades Dress -- don't give up on it completely, especially if it goes on sale in time for your wedding. I have a similar yellow-and-white striped dress and I find I like wearing it with navy or green accents, if that helps you at all. And if you still want to go raspberry, I'm sure TONS of raspberry colored cardigans will be coming out from all sorts of retailers soon -- honeysuckle is the Pantone color of the year!

  14. May I ask how come you prefer longer dresses/skirts and never want to show your arms? Your outfits and styles are always gorgeous but sometimes I think a sleeveless top, short-sleeved top or tank or even a strapless dfress would look so nice on your tall, lean frama and your beautiful collarbone? How come you dress more modestly? Is it a religious thing or a personal choice or what?

Stop by & Say Hello. <3 Ada.

  15. Thanks for the sweet remarks "Elegance Personified"...to answer your question about my modest dress...I am a member of the Church of Jesys Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly referred to as "Mormons") and we believe in dressing modestly, including wearing tops that have sleeves (short sleeves or cap sleeves are fine) and wearing shorts or skirts to our knees. It's something we do to show respect for our bodies. It can be challenging to dress modestly when there are indeed so many cute options out there that don't fall under our standards, but I firmly believe in the way I've chosen to dress so I run with it. No judgement upon anyone else that chooses to dress differently than myself. We're all our own people! =) Thanks for the question!
